The Community Coalition of Sussex, Virginia (CCSV) — a nonprofit organization based in Jarratt, Va., in southeast Virginia — provides support, education, and training programs to promote self-sufficiency among the members of the community. Led by compassionate volunteers, we make it our mission to improve the living conditions and well-being of all county residents through our programs and facilities.
Our HistoryA coalition of pastors and other faith leaders came together initially in 2012 to advance the betterment of Sussex County, Virginia. Together, they organized a food pantry, holiday toy drive, back-to-school backpack giveaway, “Trunk or Treat” activity at Halloween, and more. Over the years, this coalition expanded to include business leaders, community leaders, and community residents. It became a 501(c)(3) organization in 2016 (the Community Coalition of Sussex, Virginia, or CCSV). Robert Hamlin was appointed Executive Director.
In 2019, CCSV purchased an abandoned elementary school and adjacent property in Jarratt, Va., for just $1,500. Half of the school is being renovated as a community center with recreation facilities and community meeting spaces, as well as healthcare resources and rental space for small business start-ups. The school’s other wing will be used to create a much-needed 120-seat early childhood education center, which is expected to open in early 2027. The property is named the Millard and Florence Stith Community Center after two respected residents of Jarratt who both served on the Sussex County School Board. |
